Pressestimmen
"Machines Like Me reminds us that McEwan is once-in-a-generation talent, offering readerly pleasure, cerebral incisiveness and an enticing imagination." (Lara Feigel Spectator)"[Machines Like Me] is right up there with his very best [novels]. Machines Like Me manages to combine the dark acidity of McEwan’s great early stories with the crowd-pleasing readability of his more recent work. A novel this smart oughtn’t to be such fun, but it is." (Alex Preston Observer)"Ian McEwan’s Machines Like Me is a dazzling account of our interaction with technology… He marries a gripping plot, handled with rarefied skill and dexterity, to a deep excavation of the narrowing gap between the canny and the uncanny, leaving the reader pleasurably dizzied, and marvelling at human existence." (Philip Womack Independent)"Compelling… unforgettably strange… there are many pleasures and many moments of profound disquiet in this book, which reminds you of its author’s mastery of the underrated craft of storytelling… [Machines Like Me] is morally complex and very disturbing, animated by a spirit of sinister and intelligent mischief that feels unique to its author." (Marcel Theroux Guardian)"[McEwan's] fierce intelligence [crackles] like a Jumping Jack on Bonfire Night… Arguably the finest English writer of his generation, the ideas he explores are important, now more that ever." (Richard Dismore Daily Express)

… moves science forward. This new novel is set in 1982. Mrs. Thatcher is prime minister, still clinging to power after losing in the Falklands War, when not just one or two Exocet-rockets damage or sank British war ships, but many more go down and the human loss is staggering. Other historical facts have also been changed but this new history forms only the background for the novel and the life of Charlie Friend it narrates. The most important difference is, that our current digital environment is more or less present in 1982 and on top the industry has developed a humanoid robot and manufactured a pilot series of 25 machines. Charlie using funds from his inheritance is one of the few Brits who actually buys one of these machines and puts him to life. Interestingly this Adam - apart from having to recharge regularly - has a fully developed mind and a human-like consciousness, which brings some surprise to Charlie’s rather dull and unadventurous life. After 300 pages the story stops and leaves you guessing, if there would be sequel in the future. Not impossible, let’s see.Good reading, some interesting thoughts and a well-designed alternate history, both somewhat typical for British literature.
Writers and books I read in 2019 so far. An intelligent novel about AI and another world. A different past because of minor changes leads to an alternative developmentVery nice!
Insightful. Philosophical. Ian writes beautifully about our human condition and how future AI could make us more aware of our fundamental dilemmas. Rise above yourself and grasp the world.
The next brilliant book of Ian McEwan. Highly intelligent, thoughtful and somehow comforting if you are worried about an AI future
Sie sind in all ihrem Tun, in all ihren Reaktionen einfach völlig unglaubwürdig.
Thought-provoking, profound, convincing characters, an important novel in the age of digitalisation. I highly recommend it.
